What Causes a Partially Paid Order?
Partially paid orders happen when customers accept a post-purchase upsell offer, but their payment doesn't go through, so they get a "payment declined" message. The failed payment can be due to insufficient funds on their card or denial of the payment by the credit card provider.
In orders where the payment failed for a post-purchase upsell item, the item will still be included with the products the customer successfully purchased, and the status of the entire order will transition to "Partially paid".; once the upsell item is paid in full, the order will continue its fulfillment process.
Partially paid orders in Shopify Orders
Inside your Shopify Admin’s Orders page, a “Partially paid” tag will be displayed next to each partially paid order:
Partially paid orders will also show a failed payment processing attempt in the order timeline.
Resolving Partially paid orders
There are two ways to resolve a Partially paid order :
- Collecting the unpaid sum for the purchased product: Once an order has been labeled as “Partially paid”, the customer will be notified on their order confirmation email, as well as on the order’s confirmation page about their order’s status, giving them the option to complete their purchase through their order’s status page.
- Removing the unpaid product from the customer’s order: In cases where the customer didn’t complete their order by paying for the additional product, removing the unpaid product from their order would ensure that the unpaid product will not be fulfilled and supplied to the customer without payment.
